Environmental information systems
Every six years, EU Member States undertake a major collective effort to assess the state of nature across the Union. This process takes place under the reporting obligations of the Birds Directive (Article 12) and the Habitats Directive (Article 17), which together form the legal backbone of biodiversity monitoring in Europe. The data collected and reported enable a harmonised assessment of biodiversity within each Member State and across the EU. The knowledge generated through this process is fundamental to implementing the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and guiding actions to improve conditions for nature throughout Europe.

National reporting under the Birds and Habitats Directives is compiled into a comprehensive report that provides an evidence-based overview of the condition of Europe’s nature. The next State of Nature Report, covering the reporting cycle 2019-2024, is planned for publication in 2027. The report from the previous reporting cycle was published in 2020.
