Cyprus has established a Coordination Committee for the implementation of actions for MAES comprising of 3 scientists/experts from academia and 2 experts from the government sector (Department of Environment & Department of Forests). The committee will be under the auspices of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr Costas Kadis.

A workshop on what on the general issue on Ecosystem Services and what has been studied so far will be presented in a workshop in July 2018. Additionally, a workshop is proposed to be organized in Cyprus for the implementation of mapping and assessing ecosystem services in Cyprus within the month of September 2018. The workshop will aim at informing and training at both political and scientific/technical levels so as to achieve the goal set in Goal 2, Action 5 of the European Biodiversity Strategy.

Cyprus completed two studies:

1) ROADMAP FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AN EVALUATION FRAMEWORK FOR ECOSYSTEM SERVICES IN CYPRUS (2015). The study included, among others, the categories of ecosystems; categories of the ecosystem services; impact assessment;  Development of methodology for the national assessment of ecosystems; Pilot Study on the Mapping of Ecosystem Services, Evaluation of existing data for Cyprus as well as evaluation based on land cover maps etc.

2) MAPPING AND ASSESSMENT OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES (MAES) in Cyprus (2017). The study included Mapping of ecosystems; establishing indicators for monitoring and evaluation of Ecosystem Services; Categorization of the Ecosystem Services according to ecosystem; Mapping of Ecosystem, etc.

A new case study on wetland ecosystems for the Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystem Services is planned to be implemented by the end of 2018.
