<p lang="en-US">The mission of the <strong>Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)</strong> is to facilitate free and open access to biodiversity data worldwide via the Internet to underpin sustainable development. <p>The <strong>Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) </strong>is a European programme for the implementation of a European capacity for Earth observation. From the pre-operational services launched so far, the following two are most relevant in the context of BISE:</p>

<p>The <strong>Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON)</strong> – is the biodiversity arm of the Global Earth Observation System of System of Systems (GEOSS). Some 100 governmental and non-governmental organizations are collaborating through GEO BON to make their biodiversity data, information and forecasts more readily accessible to policymakers, managers, experts and other users.</p>
<p>A cost effective system of biodiversity data collection at regional, national and European levels is currently under development within the EU FP7 project EBONE.</p>

<p><strong>LifeWatch</strong> e-Infrastructure for Biodiversity Research</p>
<p>LifeWatch will construct and bring into operation the facilities, hardware, software and governance structures for all aspects of biodiversity research. It will consist of: facilities for data generation and processing; a network of observatories; facilities for data integration and interoperability; virtual laboratories offering a range of analytical and modelling tools; and a Service Centre providing special services for scientific and policy users, including training and research opportunities for young scientists. The current preparatory project brings together the interested EU Member and Associated States with the objective of preparing a cooperation agreement on the construction and maintenance of the LifeWatch research infrastructure.</p>

<p lang="en-US"><strong>EMODN</strong><strong>ET</strong> - The European Marine Observation and Data Network is an effort undertaken by the EU’s Maritime Policy Blue Book, welcomed by the European Council in 2007. The aim is to improve access to high quality marine data for private bodies, public authorities and researchers. A set of preparatory actions on biological data, hydrograpic data, chemical data, geological data and broad scale habitats has been launched for a limited set of Sea Basins, which aim at gathering experience for a later permanent operational system. <a href="http://ec.europa.eu/maritimeaffairs/emodnet_en.html#1"></a></p>

<p><strong>EuMon</strong><strong> - </strong>EU-wide monitoring methods and systems of surveillance for species and habitats of Community interest</p>
<p>The EuMon portal provides information on biodiversity monitoring in Europe, national responsibilities, and biodiversity coverage of the Natura 2000 network. Policy briefs for these topics are also available. It also provides a support tool called BioMAT for the design and analysis of monitoring schemes.</p>
